LIBERIA: Democracy under threat, President Sirleaf says of S’Court postponement of Presidential re-run

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia is of the opinion that democracy in her country is under threat days after Justice Francis Korkpor of the Supreme Court indefinitely halted the presidential election run-off earlier scheduled for yesterday, November 7.

In a radio interview monitored in Monrovia, Sirleaf said; “Democracy is only as strong as its weakest link and at these moments, our democracy is under assault. Our country’s reputation is under assault, our economy is under stress.”

“Allegations, hate speech, inciteful language has been defining what should be a proud moment in our history,” she said on Tuesday. “We politicians must do better … Historians will look back at this time and judge us by how we conduct ourselves at this critical moment in time.”

The presidential election run-off earlier scheduled for November 7, which has now been postponed indefinitely had pitched former soccer star George Weah and Vice President Joseph Boakai in the second round of polls.

Reading the ruling to a packed court room on Monday, Justice Korkpor said the polls were postponed indefinitely while the National Elections Commission investigates allegations of irregularities and fraud in the first round.
