Spanish court annuls Catalonia’s independence declaration

The October 27 declaration of independence by the Catalan regional government which was preceded by a disputed referendum on October 1 that was ruled illegal by Madrid has been annulled by a Spanish court.

Reports say the court described Catalonia’s regional government declaration of independence as “a serious attack on the rule of law”.

The Catalan parliament should note that the right to autonomy “is not and can not be confused with sovereignty,” the court said on Wednesday.

The ruling came after sacked Catalan leader, Carles Puigdemont and four other associates turned themselves in to Belgian police.

It also follows a decision by a Belgian judge which granted them all conditional release after Spain issued a European warrant for their arrest over charges of rebellion and misuse of public funds.

According to Belgian prosecutors, the group will soon appear and they are all barred from leaving Belgium without the judge’s consent.
