Sony’s Aibo robot dog returns but different from its predecessor

Sony’s robot dog Aibo, first introduced in 1999, is back but different from its predecessor.

The robot went out of production over ten years ago, but it is back with new features like the LED eyes that give it “sparkle with a clever twinkle.

It also moves more naturally than the earlier models, which were pretty stiff and lumbering. Sony developed ultra-compact single- and dual-axis actuators that give Aibo “hundreds” of different movements and gestures, making it appear more dog-like.

The robot’s AI capabilities allow it to learn and recognize different people’s faces. It can also identify the position of objects in a room and remember to avoid them.

Aibo can be controlled by a user’s voice and is cloud-connected. Battery life is said to be around 2 hours, and it takes 3 hours to charge fully. Somewhat strangely, Sony designed Aibo to “love anything pink” and be afraid of heights and tight spaces.
