BREAKING NEWS: Finally, Mugabe resigns after 37yrs in power
One of Africa’s sit-tight leaders Robert Mugabe on Tuesday resigned as President of Zimbabwe after 37years in office, throwing up jubilation in the streets of Harare.
The speaker of the parliament, Jacob Mubenda, made the announcement on Tuesday.
Mugabe’s resignation came a few hours after the Zimbabwean parliament began the impeachment process against President Robert Mugabe who has been in power since its 1980 independence.
The erstwhile leader ruled the country with an iron fist for almost four decades and is the only leader the nation has known since it achieved independence from Britain in 1980.
Mr Mugabe is accused of allowing his wife to “usurp power” by trying to make her his successor as the next president of Zimbabwe.

Parliament speaker Jacob Mubenda said the motion to impeach Mugabe was “unprecedented in the history of post-independence Zimbabwe”.
The motion to remove him was supported by Mr Mugabe’s own Zanu-PF party.
Mr Mugabe had refused to resign despite last week’s military takeover, and days of protests against his rule..
The motion for impeachment was moved and seconded at parliament but lawmakers had adjourned to a hotel conference centre to debate it in a joint session, only for the announcement to be made shortly after the proceedings began.
Meanwhile, with Mugabe’s resignation, the Parliament has adjourned to Wednesday, when it said a new president would be named.
