PDP CRISIS: Senate caucus opts for political solution

Senators elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday night in Abuja, endorsed a political solution, for the crisis bedeviling the party.

The decision is coming two weeks after Governor Henry Seriake Dickson-led peace committee submitted its recommendations to the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu on how to resolve the protracted crisis

The meeting which was reportedly held at the private residence of the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, had more than 30 lawmakers in attendance. Senator Ekweremadu, who is the defacto PDP head in the Senate, presided over the meeting.

It was gathered that the meeting kicked off at about 7.30pm on Tuesday and lasted till 9pm. Some Senators who were at the meeting, told Ripples Nigeria that they agreed to opt for a political solution to the crisis rocking the party.

The lawmakers revealed that they also agreed not to support Ali Modu Sheriff-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party or Ahmed Markafi-led Caretaker Committee, till the Supreme Court gives a verdict on the issue.

Although the Senators declined to comment on whether or not they will accept the final outcome of the Supreme Court, they however claimed that a political solution, as recommended by Dickson-led committee will solve the crisis.

It was learnt that lawmakers also agreed not to interfere with the ongoing court case and insisted that a precedence must be set by the Supreme Court judgment on the lingering crisis in the party.

At the end of the caucus meeting, PDP lawmakers appointed Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe as its spokesman.‎ The Senators in affirming Abaribe as its official voice, resolved that going forward, every decision of the caucus would be conveyed to the public through him.

“Every statement emanating from Senator Abaribe represents the official position of the PDP Senate caucus and every information purporting to come from the caucus should be cross checked with the spokesman,” a lawmaker said.
