Super Eagles goalkeeper crisis worsens as injured Enyeama is out
The current goalkeeper crisis being faced by Gernot Rohr’s Super Eagles has taken a turn for the worst as Ligue one side, Lille, announced that Vincent Enyeama, who was linked for a return to the national team, has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
The 34-year-old former Eagles’ number one goalkeeper, who has been Lille’s first choice goalie for a number of seasons, has missed the last three games of the club due to the injury.
And according to an official statement from the club, he won’t take part in any of their games for the rest of the season.
“Vincent Enyeama will be out for the rest of the season. #CourageVincent,” Lille tweeted via the club’s official handle on Thursday.
On the replies, several Lille fans reacted to the unfortunate announcement by expressing their sympathy for the Nigerian star, wishing him a quick recovery.
The former Super Eagles captain was due to hold talks with Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr about a possible return to the national team, following doubts surrounding first choice goalkeeper Carl Ikeme who is battling to be fit.
The ex-Enyimba star, who left the team after a disagreement with former coach Sunday Oliseh in 2015, seemed to be the best player to stand between the sticks as Nigeria continue in their quest for the 2018 FIFA World Cup ticket as well as 2019 Africa Cup of Nations appearance.
Enyeama has been named the best goalkeeper in Africa three times in the last seven years, and was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2002, 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
But the Super Eagles will be playing South Africa in an AFCON Qualifier in June, and with Enyeama’s injury making him out of reach, Rohr will now be faced with the prospect of either fielding Daniel Akpeyi or Ikechukwu Ezenwa for the encounter.
