Reps to summon IGP Idris over selective settlement of claims of dead officers

The House of Representatives ad-hoc committee on alleged corrupt practices by government agencies and insurance companies has vowed to summon the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris.

The committee said it wants to summon the IGP to explain to Nigerians, alleged wrongdoings in the administration of the police insurance group life insurance, and selective settlement of claims of deceased officers by the police.

This was made known by the committee chairman, Abdulkaber Akinlade, in a statement he released in Abuja, explaining that his committee has been worried over the allegation from the families of the deceased against the police.

According to Akinlade, it was unthinkable that police officers who put their lives on the line to defend the citizens of the country would be so poorly treated by their superiors.

The committee chairman went further to say that summoning the IGP became expedient following his neglect of the committee members when he invited them to his office at police headquarters Abuja.

Akinlade said that members of his committee on Insurance had gone on a pre-arranged visit to the police head-quarters for a meeting with the IGP only for the police boss to ignore and keep them in the office of his Principal Staff Officer for hours, leading to members of the committee leaving in protest.

While he described the alleged treatment of lawmakers as ‘surprising’, Akinlade argued that the shabby treatment was suggestive of the more and more disdainful disregard for the parliament by top officials of President Muhammadu Buhari.
