North Korea shuns trump, fires another ballistic missile
The North Korean government led by defiant leader Kim Jong Un has fired a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan.
The move by Pyongyang is coming two days after US President Donald Trump sounded a note of warning saying that Washington might deal with North Korea’s nuclear and missile programmes on its own if need be.
According to South Korea’s defense ministry, the missile fired by Pyongyang was launched from the Sinpo region on North Korea’s eastern coast and about 60km into the Japanese sea.
“The military is keeping a close watch over North Korea’s provocative moves and maintaining a high defence posture”, it said.
The US military said it was a KN-15 medium-range ballistic missile which it had determined posed no threat to the US mainland.
Rex Tillerson, the US secretary of state, confirmed that North Korea had launched “yet another” intermediate-range ballistic missile.
“The United States has spoken enough about North Korea. We have no further comment,” he said in a statement.
Japan has also condemned the launch saying it violated UN Security Council resolutions.
On Tuesday, North Korea through its defence ministry also threatened to retaliate if the global community expanded sanctions targeting the country.
President Trump in an interview with Financial Times suggested that the US will use trade as a lever to secure Chinese cooperation against North Korea by imposing sanctions on Kim’s led government.
