Prepare to impose new sanctions on North Korea, Trump tells UN

President Donald Trump has told the Security Council of the United Nations to prepare fresh sanctions against defiant North Korea led by Kim Jong Un over its recent missile activities.

Trump made the order at a White House meeting with 15 UN Security Council ambassadors, including China and Russia on Monday.

“The council must be prepared to impose additional and stronger sanctions on North Korean nuclear and ballistic missile programmes,” he said.

According to US officials, more tougher sanctions against North Korea could include an oil embargo, banning of the North’s airline, intercepting cargo ships and punishing Chinese banks and other foreign firms doing business with Pyongyang.

Trump’s order is coming a day after North Korea vowed to to sink an approaching US aircraft carrier cruising towards the tense Korean peninsula while it also sounded a note of warning to Australia vowing to strike it with nuclear weapons if it “blindly” followed its American ally.

North Korea’s threat to US and Australia also follows the arrest of a US citizen who was detained by cops in North Korea as he attempted to take a flight out of the country.

His arrest was confirmed by the Swedish embassy in North Korea which revealed that the Korean-American citizen was arrested at the Pyongyang airport while attempting to take a flight out of the country and was later detained.
