NORWAY: Disaster averted as police find, defuse bomb planted at railway station

An explosive device found near a busy subway station in the Norwegian capital of Oslo was found and defused by local police.

The suspect who planted the explosive device has been reportedly arrested with reports revealing that the discovery by the police led to late night evacuations of restaurants and bars.

Norway’s security service PST said early Sunday it had taken over the investigation but declined to elaborate.

“There are several reasons as to why we have taken over the case,” PST spokesman Martin Bernsen told the Aftenposten daily. He was not immediately available for comments.

“Now we will secure evidence and make the interviews,” he added.

“Every restaurant was being closed,” said 23-year-old Malin Myrvold, who witnessed the scene from a fourth-story window. “You could see cops in heavy armor going in every store and restaurant.

According to Police Chief Vidar Pedersen, the explosive was found on the street just outside the Groenland underground station.

The incident is coming three days after 39-year-old Uzbek national killed no less than four people when he rammed a truck into a departmental store in Stockholm, Sweden killing four people in the process in an attack that sent cold shivers throughout the Scandinavian country.
