Nigerian army frees 593 Boko Haram suspects
The Nigerian army has reportedly freed no less than 593 people who were suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists after they were cleared of having any ties with the terrorist group.
According to Brigadier General Abdulraman Kuliya, the chief of army staff directed that those arrested be “released unconditionally if found not to have anything to do with insurgency or Boko Haram”.
After clearing them of having ties Boko Haram, those who were freed comprised elderly people, men, women and children who were earlier captured in the military’s fight against insurgency aimed at creating an Islamic caliphate in northeast Nigeria.
The fight against Boko Haram which is now in its eighth year has witnessed killing of over 20,000 people by the insurgents and has forced over two million people away from their various homes.
