Amid talks of action against North Korea, China deploys nuclear envoy
As talks over North Korea’s increasingly defiant weapons programme continue, a Chinese nuclear envoy will arrive in South Korea on Monday even as a U.S. Navy strike group heads to the region amid concerns Pyongyang may be readying a fresh nuclear test.
Talks of a possible US reaction filled the air after last week’s U.S. strikes against Syria which was further fueled by comments from U.S. President Donald Trump’s top aides over the weekend.
In Tokyo, the feasibility of U.S. military action was downplayed, while South Korea said the focus remained on deterrence and readiness.
“It probably is not realistic for the U.S. to attack North Korea,” a Japanese defence ministry source said. “If America says it is going to attack, both Japan and South Korea will probably put a stop to it,” said the source who declined to be identified.
The United States may however be ready to flex muscles with Pyongyang after it agreed to deploy a Navy Strike group near the Korean peninsula as a show of force.
Reports say the Navy Strike group is already on its way as it was spotted moving towards the Western Pacific Ocean as concerns grow towards North Korea’s increasing missile activities.
According to a Navy official, who was not authorized to speak to the media and requested anonymity, the strike group, called Carl Vinson, includes an aircraft carrier and will make its way from Singapore towards the Korean peninsula.
