After accusations of being cheated, YCEE terminates deal with Sony Music

Six months after accusing Michael Ugwu, Sony Music West Africa’s General Manager of ripping him and other acts signed onto the platform off their hard work, Tinny Music act, YCEE has terminated his music distribution deal with the music platform.

According to an official statement on the website of Tinny Entertainment, the deal with Sony was terminated on the grounds that the contract is not beneficial to them as promised.

“We would like to state officially that we terminated our contract with SONY through our lawyers, Olaniwun Ajayi LP, by a letter dated 5 December 2017. Henceforth, we are the sole owners of the copyright in any and all of our music and can exploit our music on any and every platform. We have realized that it is best to undertake the distribution of our records by ourselves, as a Record Label and that Made in Nigeria across board, is the only way to be above board.” As a Label, we are pushing out great music this year starting with “Say Bye Bye,” “I Wish” and our YCEE and Bella Collabo EP, “Late Night Vibrations.” We thank you for the love! ,” the statement by Tinny Entertainment read.

YCEE had revealed in a series of posts on his Twitter page that the Sony Music executive has ripped him and other acts signed onto the platform off their hard work.

In his reply, Sony Music West Africa’s General Manager said that this is not the first time he has been called out and it will not be the last.

He also noted that the act of making false and defamatory statements in the media about another which harms his reputation is libelous.

Ugwu also informed YCEE that a contract is a “voluntary” arrangement between two or more parties that is enforceable by law as a binding legal document.

He also put it to YCEE that if he is aggrieved in anyway, there are appropriate methods of contract dispute resolutions which include; negotiation, mediation, arbitration and litigation.
