RUSSIA MEDDLING: Trump’s lawyers do not want him to face Mueller probe —New York Times
A report by New York times has revealed that the lawyers of President Donald Trump of the United States of America have advised him against sitting down for an interview with a special counsel Robert Mueller investigating possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign team during the last election.
According to the New York Times citing four people briefed on the matter, Trump’s lawyers fear the president’s penchant for making false statements and contradicting himself, could see him charged with lying to investigators probing the influence of Russia on the 2016 presidential election.
However, a decision on whether he’ll attend the interview has not been decided yet but if Trump refuses to appear before Mueller, the special counsel could subpoena the president to testify before a grand jury.
Trump has said he would be willing to be interviewed under oath by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. “I‘m looking forward to it, actually,” Trump told reporters last month.
In a related development, Trump was also warned days ago by Senior Democrats not to use the controversial anti-Trump memo as a “pretext” to fire Mueller.
The Senior Democrats warned that such a move could trigger a constitutional crisis and will derail investigations into alleged Russian involvement in the last US election which brought Trump into power.
The warning by the Senior Democrats was issued after the FBI and White House were involved in a face-off following a plot by the Republican lawmakers to release a controversial memo which purports to show anti-Trump bias at the agency.
