W’CUP: Eagles to play Congo DR friendly in Port Harcourt

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has approved the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt as the playing ground for the Super Eagles’ farewell pre-World Cup friendly next month.

The NFF struck an agreement with Rivers State government that the national team should play the friendly at the place they started their qualification journey to Russia.

The Eagles defeated Swaziland 2-0 in Port Harcourt in November 2015 to qualify for the third round of the African qualifiers.

Commenting on the development, NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, commended the Rivers State Government and the people of the state for their unflinching support for the Super Eagles and expressed satisfaction with the state of facilities at the Stadium.

He added: “We are playing on the 28th of May, 2018 against the Democratic Republic of Congo. After the match, the Rivers State Governor will host the two teams to a dinner.

“Everywhere is home to the Super Eagles. Lagos, Port Harcourt, Uyo, Kano, Kaduna or Minna. They are Super Eagles of Nigeria and every part is integral to the development of football.”

Making the announcement on Thursday, the Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Boma Iyaye, told the media that the state will ensure the Amiesimaka Stadium is ready for the game come May 28.

“Governor Wike has done well in terms of funding national sporting events. He hosted the African Wrestling Championship on behalf of the Federal Government.

“Now he is hosting the Super Eagles and Democratic Republic of Congo on behalf of the Federal Government. This is something that is worthy of commendation,” said Iyaye.
