Danger looms as health workers commence nationwide strike

Danger looms across government owned hospitals as Federal health workers under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) commenced indefinite strike following Federal Government’s failure to implement the agreement it reached with the group last year.

The group announced its resolution to embark on strike on Tuesday, in a statement on Monday signed by its national chairman, Biobelemoye Josiah; and its national secretary, Florence Ekpebor.

JOHESU said that it had on September 30, 2017 called off its nationwide strike following the signing of a memorandum of terms of settlement with the Federal Government, which was to be implemented within five weeks after the date of suspension of the strike.

It said that it has in its demand asked among other things, an upward review of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure, employment of additional health workers, the implementation of court judgments and the upward review of the retirement age from 60 to 65.

JOHESU however regretted that despite the fact that it had continued to remind the Federal Government of its agreement with it, and even given government a 30-day ultimatum, which is expected to lapse this Tuesday, nothing has been done.

The health workers therefore said that since the Federal Government appears not to take them seriously, that it had no choice but to embark on strike.
