If I hadn’t gone to school, I may have been involved in herdsmen fight –Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday urged the people of Bauchi State to go to school and get education.

He stated that it will benefit them and the society and not hope and wait for government to provide them with what to do.

He said that he was able to get a military job because he went to school, adding that if he had not gone to school that he might have been one of the herdsmen involved in the clashes with farmers across the country.

Buhari stated this while addressing in Hausa, thousands of Bauchi residents who were at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium to welcome him on his first visit to the state since 2015.

Buhari was in the state for a two-day state visit and had during his visit inaugurated the 261 Nigerian Air Force Referral Hospital, some roads and five tractors and some farm implements.

He said, “Make every effort to put your children in school, plead with them to be patient and read hard. In this generation, you cannot make it except you are educated.

“Now, look at the farmers/herdsmen’s clashes in the northern part of this country. I have been telling people that if I had not gone to school, I would not have gone into the military and where I come from since my cows are finished; maybe, I would have been involved in this fight.

“But because I went to school, I got a job to do and because of that, desertification is everywhere, there is no bush we will go to and cut down trees and destroy farms and the rainy season is not promising. Because of that, education is the guarantee.

“You should strive hard and be educated, get the education that will benefit you and the society, it is not compulsory that government will give you what to do.”

He said he was certain he would emerge victorious in his re-election bid in the coming 2019 general elections.

On corrupt government officials and looters he said, “Any person that loots government’s fund will be made to return it to the treasury for utilisation on the education, health and security sectors, among others.”
