2019: PDP decries Lamido’s arrest, says APC plans to arrest more opposition figures

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party has bemoaned the arrest of former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, and said it is aware that the party is in for a hard time ahead 2019 general elections.

The PDP also said that like Lamido, it was sure that the Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) Federal Government will arrest and intimidate more of its prominent leaders.

The party stated this in a statement released by the publicity secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, of the Senator Ahmed Makarfi led National Working Committee.

He said that both the arrest of former Benue State governor, Gabriel Suswam, and Lamido were all politically motivated.

“The true reason for his arrest, however, has to do with the forthcoming local government elections in Jigawa State. The long incarceration of former Governor Gabriel Suswam is also linked to the forthcoming local government elections in Benue State.

“The APC-led administration is fast losing the confidence of the people because of its non-performance, high handedness and lack of empathy for the suffering of the people.

“The only option left for it is to prevent the opposition from effectively campaigning and mobilising the people for the elections. The whole strategy of the failed APC government is founded on the assumption that if there is no opposition, then they cannot be defeated.

“Hence the intimidation, harassment and incarceration of popular opposition leaders like Sule Lamido. We are aware that, we in the opposition will be in for a hard time in the run-up to the 2019 general elections with more arrests and intimidation of our prominent leaders.”

Lamido has been in the custody of the Nigerian Police after honouring its invitation on Sunday in Kano State.

Police in a statement on why he was arrested said he made inciting utterances capable of causing chaos in his state local government election slated to hold on July 1.
