SUSWAM’s 65th DAY IN DETENTION: Group calls on NASS, int’l community to interfere

A Benue State pressure group, Benue Concerned Citizens, has called on members of the National Assembly and the international community to interfere in the continued detention of a former governor of the state, Gabriel Suswam.
The Department of State Security (DSS) had on February 25, arrested the former governor and has kept him incommunicado without trial for 65 days now.
The group at a press briefing in Benue bemoaned the prolonged detention, wondering why the DSS has refused to neither try the former governor nor allow his lawyers and family members access to him.
In a press statement issued, and signed by 20 indigenes of Benue which was read by Tim Nyor at the event, the group decried the “conspiratorial complicities” between the Benue State government and security institutions that led to the ex-governor’s detention without trial.
Meanwhile, a former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, was reported to have described the continued detention of Suswam by the DSS as a drift to the old days of military rule.
Tsav, who argued that Suswam should have been charged to court upon his arrest on February 25, termed the DSS’ action improper.
Tsav, a commissioner at the Public Compliant Commission in Benue State, was said to have also argued that there was no substance in the alleged report to the DSS by the state government, advising that the immediate past governor of the state could be a security threat if released.
