CORRUPTION CHARGE: Court set to decide fate of former Brazilian president
The fate of embattled former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva who has been charged with corruption will be decided by three judges who will determine whether or not to uphold a prison term handed to him.
Lula has been sentenced to nine-and-a-half years’ imprisonment, but if the judges don’t overturn that he won’t be sent straight to jail.
He has remained free while the most recent appeal was heard, and could still appeal to higher courts.
If the decision is upheld, then Lula who was convicted of corruption and money-laundering in July 2017, may well kiss his ambition to win another term as president at elections this October goodbye.
However, the former president has firmly denied the allegations against him, saying that they re designed by his detractors to stop him running for office again.
