Saraki: APC made PDP’s Ekweremadu Dep Senate President, not me
Senate President, Bukola Saraki has argued that Senators of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are to blame for Ike Ekweremadu’s emergence as Deputy Senate President, and not himself.
According to him, he never made any deal with the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to have Ekweremadu emerge as deputy senate president.
It would be recalled that Saraki and Ekweremadu emerged as Senate President and Deputy Senate President respectively in an election that was regarded as controversial by many.
Their emergence set off a face off between the APC leadership and supporters of Saraki who felt he had sold the birthright of the party by allowing a member of the opposition pick such a seat in their government.
However, Saraki in a series of tweets on Monday in response ”tis question in that regards contended that the APC lawmakers who abandoned the chambers on the day of the election for another meeting were to blame for the outcome of the election.
He said, “I did not do any deal with PDP . I did not have to because even before they took group decision, 22 or them already endorsed me.
“I didn’t envisage some APC members being absent from Senate especially when the clerk already received a proclamation from the President.
“If a team refused to turn up for a scheduled match and was consequently walked over, would it be fair to blame the team that turned up?”, he asked.
According to him, a Proclamation is an official announcement dealing with a matter of great importance. To delay equals the National Assembly disobeying the President.
Saraki explained further, that another proclamation would have been needed if the process was to have been delayed, changing the date and time, adding, that “Proclamation not same as press statement or open invitation.
“Those that made it possible for PDP to claim DSP position were those who decided to hold a meeting when senators ought to be in the chambers”, he argued.
