How Boko Haram killed eight soldiers in Yobe
At least no less than eight soldiers were on Tuesday night allegedly killed in a village near Damaturu, Yobe State capital in the North-east part of Nigeria, reports say.
The dreaded insurgent group was said to have taken the soldiers by surprise at Sassawa, a village in Damaturu Local Government Area of the state at about 6pm, attacking and killing eight of them.
It was gathered that the terrorist group stormed a football pitch where the soldiers were in five Hilux Toyota Pick-ups, drove straight to the unsuspecting troops and opened fire on them. An officer was said to be among the eight killed while many others were injured.
It was further leant that the Boko Haram terrorists had a field day in the village after the Tuesday night attack. They were said to have moved round the village opening and looting food items from shops.
There was also claim that on Wednesday, around 10am, that the military conveyed copses of the soldiers killed to Damaturu in two military vans.
Spokesperson for 3 Division Military Base in Damaturu, Col. Kayode Ogunsanya, who confirmed the attack, said he could not at the moment tell the number of soldiers killed. He however claimed that there were casualties on both sides.
“I cannot ascertain the number of casualties just yet. Men on the ground repelled the attack,” he said.
Sassawa is 37 kilometres away from Damaturu and has since the establishment of military base and formation in the area witnessed four attacks, it was learnt.
