INDONESIA: Suspected ISIS members nabbed in separate operations

In a continued bid to rid its system of homegrown radicalism, authorities in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, have arrested no less than nine men suspected to have links with Islamic State popularly known as ISIS.

According to national police spokesman, Rikwanto, the arrested men are suspected have links to Indonesia’s most high-profile militant network Jemaah Asharut Daulah (JAD) which is loyal to Islamic State.

“They were planning attacks on police stations from the district level all the way to the provincial level,” Rikwanto said of the men arrested in Riau.

Police said eight men were arrested on Tuesday in Riau province and one man in South Sulawesi province, in two separate operations.

He added that the men were suspected of joining a training camp in a neighbouring province where they learnt to shoot guns and assemble bombs.

In recent weeks, counter-terrorism police in Indonesia have grappled with a recent resurgence in homegrown radicalism inspired by extremist group Islamic State prompting almost a daily raid of militant hideouts.
