Hawaii judge blocks Trump’s travel ban, for third time
For the third time in a row, the controversial travel ban on several Muslim countries mooted by US President Donald Trump has been blocked by a federal judge in Hawaii.
Judge Derrick Watson has found that Trump’s order “plainly discriminates based on nationality” and fails to show that people coming from the listed countries would be” detrimental” to US national interests.
After earlier orders by Trump in January and March were at least partly blocked by legal challenges, the White House last month issued another version, imposing partial or full entry bans against people from seven countries, Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen citing security risks.
Recall that days after the state of Hawaii filed an amended lawsuit to stop Trump’s revised travel ban at a federal court in Honolulu, several other states such as Washington, Massachusetts, Oregon and New York say they’ll follow suit.
Washington was the first US state to sue over Trump’s initial travel ban that created chaos worldwide and was eventually blocked, but the state in renewed suit argued that the revised order violates the constitution “by disfavouring Islam”.
