5 weeks after, ASUU announces ‘conditional suspension’ of strike

Over a month after, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a conditional suspension of its industrial action after reaching an agreement with the Federal Government following a meeting on Monday.

The ASUU President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, stated this in Abuja on Monday night, after concluding the final meeting with the Federal Government delegation.

The government delegation was led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

Recall that on August 13, ASUU commenced an indefinite nationwide strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill the 2009 agreement made with the union.

ASUU had stated that “there shall be no teaching, no examination and no attendance of statutory meetings of any kind in any of our branches till government meets the union’s demands “.

On the reasons for the strike action, Prof Ogunyemi had said that,“Among the issues in current disputes involved in the 2009 agreement and 2013 MOU are funding for the revitalisation of public universities and earned academic allowances.

“Others include registration of Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO), University staff school, fractionalisation and non-payment of salaries”.
