Egypt coach Cuper to step down after World Cup -report
Egypt’s Argentinian coach Hector Cuper is likely to step down after the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, according to reports.
According to the Algerian newspaper El Watan and quoted by Foufourtwo, the Egyptian Football Association has already approved Cuper’s departure after their upcoming final group game against Saudi Arabia next Monday.
Egypt suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of hosts Russia in St. Petersburg on Tuesday. Having lost their first game 1-0 to Uruguay, they now only have a mathematical chance of advancing to the knockout round.
But after the team’s defeat to Russia, Cuper sounded uncertain about his future with the Pharaohs. He said:
“Whether I should stay or not does not only depend on me. If those responsible are not happy with what I’ve done, I’ll be the first to leave, there’s no doubt about that.”
62-year-old Cuper took the job in 2015 and has led the Pharaohs to their first World Cup finals in 28 years. He also steered the team to the final of the 2017 African Cup of Nations where they lost to winners Cameroon.
