FG Urges NIMC To Stop Duplication Of Bio-Data

Acting Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Habiba Lawal, said in spite of the commission’s success at data capture of registered persons in the country, there was still much more to be done.

The Federal Government yesterday urged the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to evolve a more effective identity management system devoid of duplications.

The management of NIMC confirmed recently that it had already commenced the harmonisation process for the bio-data of all Nigerians.

Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card registration being handled by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC); Bank Verification Number (BVN); Drivers Licence by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and voters card number are among data expected to be harmonised.

The Federal Government yesterday said the proliferation and duplication of efforts at biometric-based ‎identity systems was neither cost effective, nor smart security wise.

“Apart from being unwieldy, the cost of operating multiple and discordant databases and infrastructure is unattainable,” it said.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola-led new Governing Board of NIMC in Abuja yesterday, Acting Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Habiba Lawal, said in spite of the commission’s success at data capture of registered persons in the country, there was still much more to be done.

Lawal urged the members who are drawn from government and private sector to take a cue from countries that have successfully issued unique identity to their citizens and have used identity to transform their society and economy.
