Finally, former Zimbabwe finance minister gets bail

Temporary relief has come the way of former Zimbabwe finance minister Ignatius Chombo after he was released on bail following an order by a High Court which accused the government of illegal and arbitrary detention.

The court presided over by judge Edith Mushore also ordered Chombo who is facing charges of corruption dating back two decades, including defrauding the central bank, to pay $5,000 bail and surrender his passport.

Chombo was detained after the military seized power in “Operation Restore Legacy” two weeks ago, which it said was meant to remove “criminals” around former president Robert Mugabe.

Two days ago, Chombo’s bail hearing at the High Court which had been due to sit on the case on Wednesday was postponed till the next day after the state prosecutor said he needed time to prepare his case.

The former finance minister was slammed with charges of corruption and abuse of power related to his earlier tenure as minister of local government, public works and urban development.

He was among members of the G40 political faction allied to 93-year-old Mugabe and his wife, Grace, who were also expelled from the ruling ZANU-PF party.
