BIAFRA: Not in this millennium, Army chief Buratai tells agitators

Apparently worried by agitations for an independent state by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has vowed to ensure Nigeria remains as one country.

He has therefore called on the agitators to forget their clamours insisting that such thing will not happen in the country in this millennium.

IPOB, MASSOB and some other groups from the Southeast part of the country have intensified their clamour for the restoration of Biafra since the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB in October 2015.

Nigerian security operatives have been accused of killing hundreds of these agitators who have maintained non-violent approach in their demand for a sovereign state.

The alleged brutal force used against these agitators has been attested to by Amnesty International, a global human rights organization.

But speaking in Abuja recently after receiving an award conferred on him by a coalition of over 80 civil society organisations (CSOs), Buratai, maintained that the army would not forgive any act that could lead to the break-up of the country.
He said, “Those individuals and groups that are bent on destabilising our country I think they have to wait till may be the next three or four millennia for them to do that. That is, may be the next generation of officers and men will allow them at all.”

“Having been given the millennium hero award, I want to call on all the agitators for separation and other acts of destabilisation; they better forget it, not in this era, not in this millennium.

“I want to say that we would continue to do our best to maintain security atmosphere that is needed as provided for in the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria. We have been tasked to defend our country.

“We have taken a number of measures to ensure that the remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists who are on the run are finally cleared, many have surrendered, many of them have been captured”, the army chief stated.
