Trump blasts May’s Brexit plans

Hours after landing in London marking his first visit to Britain as US President, Donald Trump has blasted UK’s Prime Minister, Theresa May’s Brexit plans.

In damaging remarks that could widen domestic criticism of her plans, Trump said a free trade deal with Britain might be impossible if London went ahead with Prime Minister Theresa May’s proposals for post-Brexit ties with the European Union.

According to Trump in an interview with Sun newspaper, Britain’s top-selling tabloid published late on Thursday, Trump said May’s plans for a business-friendly Brexit would leave it too close to the EU to allow a new trans-Atlantic trade deal to be struck.

Referring to May’s Brexit proposals, Trump told the Sun: “If they do a deal like that, we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the UK, so it will probably kill the deal.”

Trump’s comments are coming days after UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson stepped down from his post amid growing tension over Britain’s departure from the European Union.

Johnson’s resignation is coming a day after David Davis, the minister in charge of Brexit negotiations, also stepped down in a move that threatens to tear apart Prime Minister Theresa May’s government.

Reports say the two resignations leave May badly exposed and raise questions over whether she will stand firm in her commitment to pursue a “business friendly” Brexit, or will be faced with more resignations and calls to quit herself.
