Ekiti Assembly rejects gov results, takes action in protest

Members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly on Tuesday reacted to the outcome of the last Saturday election in the state allegdly marred by vote buying and other undemocratic activities.

The members described the process as a show of shame and rejected the election results which went in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

After they took turns to condemn the events leading to the election and its results, the members chose not to seat again for the next three months, as they adjourned plenary till October 8, over alleged harassment of lawmakers by security agents.

Leader of Business, Akinyele Olatunji, had moved the motion for the adjournment.

He had described the process leading to the election and final results as unfortunate and condemned the harassment of Governor Ayodele Fayose, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders across the state and members of the state Assembly by security men.

In his contribution, the chairman, House Committee on Information, Samuel Omotoso, argued that the election failed in democratic credentials as it was marred by “outright brigandage, vote buying and falsification of results”.

The Assembly Speaker, Kola Oluwawole, said that the election was a show of shame with thugs and security men openly working for the opposition APC.

While he regretted that figures were clearly doubled to favour Fayemi, the Speaker said he was hopeful that the stolen mandate would soon be retrieved.

The Assembly then urged security agencies deployed for the election to leave Ekiti State to allow government business to thrive unhindered.

It would be recalled that the Ekiti State House of Assembly and the governor elect, Dr Fayemi have not been the best of friends.

The lawmakers had sometime ago petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC), calling for the investigation and prosecution of Fayemi and others, for allegedly looting the State to the tune of over N40 billion.

Fayemi on his part, had filed a N500m suit against the Ekiti State House of Assembly for issuing a bench warrant against him.

This was after the assembly called on the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to arrest Fayemi and bring him to explain allegation of misappropriation of State Universal Basic Education funds totaling
