Boko Haram attacks military base in Borno, kills 4 UN workers, 1 abducted
Heavy gunfire and explosion has been heard in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso with reports revealing that the army headquarters and the French embassy are all under attack by masked men.
Reports say Barricades were erected to keep people from the French Embassy and the prime minister’s office in the eastern part of the city centre where gunfire was heard and smoke seen rising into the air.
“Terrorist attack” has hit Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougou, France’s ambassador to West Africa’s Sahel region said after an explosion rocked the army headquarters there and witnesses reported seeing masked gunmen attack the building.
“Terrorist attack this morning in Ougadougou, Burkina Faso: solidarity with colleagues and Burkinabe friends,” Jean-Marc Châtaigner wrote on Twitter, adding to avoid downtown Ouagadougou.
The West African country like its other neighbours has been targeted sporadically by extremist groups operating across Africa’s Sahel region.
Last August, suspected extremists killed at least 18 people last August during a raid on a restaurant in Ouagadougou and militants have targeted Burkinabe security forces along its remote northern border region with Mali.
